November 13, 2017 – Today, Lionsgate and GapKids launch the #ChooseKind T-Shirt Collection in honor of World Kindness Day. The designs were created as part of the WONDER CERTIFIED KIND CLASSROOM program, inspired by R.J. Palacio’s worldwide bestselling children’s novel and Lionsgate’s upcoming film Wonder, starring Academy Award® winner Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson, and Jacob Tremblay, slated for release on November 17th. The resource guide for teachers focused on bringing acts of kindness, acceptance, and inclusion to life for third to sixth grade students.
For the program’s first activity in partnership with GapKids, students designed what they thought kindness and inclusion looked like. Out of ten thousand submissions, eight winning designs were chosen to be featured on t-shirts designed by kids for kids, sold in select U.S. GapKids stores and Gap.com, starting on November 13, World Kindness Day.
All profits will benefit both the Children’s Craniofacial Association and myFace, two non-profit organizations dedicated to supporting children with craniofacial differences. Wonder explores issues many with craniofacial differences encounter: inclusion and social isolation, perseverance, the importance of good friends, and, ultimately, the extraordinary power of kindness.
“When the book Wonder was published, CCA instantly recognized it would be a platform and a tool for our kids to use to confidently talk about their differences and advocate for acceptance, said Erica Mossholder, Executive Director of CCA. “Since we launched our Choose Kind Initiative in 2012, we have seen it change classrooms around the country to be able to connect this incredible work of fiction to ‘real-life’ advocates. The message of kindness is one we hope is shaping the next generation of students to value others who are different and celebrate those diversities.”
“As one of the leading organizations that treats children and their families with craniofacial differences, we are thrilled to have this opportunity to bring more awareness to the issue,” said Priscilla Ma, Executive Director of myFace. “There is nothing more transformative than the power of kindness. This is a lesson that emanates from the book and the film, and resonates with everyone — especially our patients.”
